E.L.O. Part 2 : Arlington Heights, Illinois - 3rd July 2000
ELO2 Burns Bright In Arlington Heights As usual the boys were spectacular during their July 3rd performance at Arlington Heights, Illinois, Frontier Days Festival. Unlike most of the ELO2 concerts I’ve attended, usually going alone during my travels, I met several other avid fans to share the experience with.
I had hooked up with a good friend Matt, from Seattle, Washington, and we made it to the concert site at about 2 PM. Finding a local watering hole with our favorite brew, Bud Light, we waited for showtime. Upon arriving we met Earl and Sue from Chicago and later Jill, Joyce and Bob. We were all earlybirds.
At 8 PM the festival sponsors made their thank yous and congrats followed by the U S National Anthem.
The band started at 8:10 with the intro to Fire On High. What a classic concert opening song. There is no better. For the most part the band has been playing a similar set list but this night there were a few changes. This show included Rock & Roll Is King and Twilight. These songs haven’t been played too often as of late. They were great.
The other observation during this show was the performances of Gordon and Hux. They are playing with a seemingly new energy. Maybe they’re becoming more comfortable but whatever it is, they’re energized.
Over London Skies was again the only new and original material played by the band. They keep promising the new cd and we keep promising to buy it. Let's hear some more new material!
Eric, Mik, Lou and Kelly were great too. They seemed to enjoy an exceptionally good concert crowd. The crowd responded after every song rewarding the band with applause and whistles, and Kelly didn’t have to cheer lead as much as usual for the finale, Don’t Bring Me Down. The crowd was in full swing for the moment.
The band stayed after the show and met with fans. They were generous with their time staying until everyone had left. It was a great way to cap off a great night of music. Old friends, new friends, old songs, new songs…who could ask for more.
P.S. – Thanks to the roadie who supplied the song list. We owe you a brew.
