When I first heard about this release, I could not wait to obtain a copy because as many E.L.O. fans know, there are not many official live releases from the band and definitely none from the "Time" era.
So, my copy of the 1982 Cologne, Germany concert arrives via Japan having been "released" in Italy. The concert opens with the crowd cheering madly to the opening keys of the track Twilight and continuing through into the next track Yours Truly,2095 also from the album Time.
Before the next track, Jeff steps to the front and thanks the audience for their appreciation of the performance so far and also announces that Bev Bevan the groups drummer is seriously ill in hospital back in England and he thanks Pete King from the band After The Fire for standing in (or should that be sitting in - HA! HA!). The crowd then cheer loudly as the next track Evil Woman starts up and they continue to applaud throughout this and the next 2 tracks, Livin' Thing and Telephone Line.
Jeff then thanks the audience and announces the next 2 tracks coming up are from the new album Time - first up it's From The End Of The World which I don't think I personally have heard played live before - in fact this performance is almost faultless with Richard Tandy's keyboard playing quite brilliant. The second track from the Time album is The Way Life's Meant To Be (wrongly marked up on the inlay card as The Way I Met).
After a very short break Jeff announces a special treat for the German audience - a tribute to John Lennon which as it turns out is a very moving medley of some of John Lennon's and the Beatles best known hits - again a very rare item recorded for posterity on this album. At the end of the track, Kelly asks the audience to show their appreciation for Richard's superb keyboard playing and for Jeff's quite moving vocals.
Next up it is the customary E.L.O. hits medley (this one lasts for half an hour !!). First up it's Showdown then Ma Ma Ma Belle which really get the audience into a frenzy. At this point the editing leaves a lot to be desired as the start of a track is cut short and the opening of Can't Get It Out Of My Head is missing as the concert continues and after a few keys of Wild West Hero and the un-credited Fire On High it's into Turn To Stone. A few bars from my personal all-time favourite E.L.O. track Standing In The Rain precedes the worldwide hit, Mr. Blue Sky which in turn blends straight into the next hit, Sweet Talkin' Woman then it's Shine A Little Love, Last Train To London and Confusion from the album Discovery. The pace is relentless and now it's Do Ya before finishing off the medley to rapturous applause with my second all-time favourite E.L.O. track - Rockaria!
Once the applause dies down slightly, Jeff thanks the audience and introduces the 'final' track - Hold On Tight - of course it isn't the final track as the band return to finish off properly with the 2 favourites, Don't Bring Me Down and Roll Over Beethoven.
Overall then, I think this cd is definitely for the true out and out E.L.O. fanatic only and even though the sound quality is not the best I've ever heard on a "boot" it is by no means the worst - there is certainly no hiss or click. The concert is certainly most welcome because as I said earlier, there is not much recorded evidence of the Time era (or later) concerts.
